What is harm reduction?
Throughout history, governments have often pursued idealistic solutions for complex issues like addiction to drugs, alcohol or junk food. Millions of people live lives that are detrimental to their health and need help from healthcare professionals. The two major strategies employed worldwide are discouraging people from engaging in behaviour harmful to their lives, which is called prevalence reduction and encouraging people to reduce the frequency or extent of the behaviour, which is called quantity reduction. However, these strategies have rarely been successful in sustainably changing outcomes. Given this knowledge, perhaps it’s time to focus on practical strategies that are in line with human behaviour to mitigate as much harm as possible. Harm reduction is a strategy used in medicine and social policy to minimise harm to individuals and/or wider society from hazardous behaviours or practices that cannot be completely avoided or prevented. Leading experts in their respective fields are producing accredited CME courses for healthcare professionals.
